Finally, in addition to teaching about Ameba and related design, we also designed and fabricated a topology-optimized curved rammed earth installation wall, collaborating with Dean Prof. Jun Mu’s team from Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Onearth Studio at the 14th DigitalFutures Global Workshop DigitalFUTURES World.
Project Team:
Design and Optimisation: Dr. Ding Wen ’Nic‘ Bao, Dr Xin Yan, and Prof Yi Min 'Mike' Xie from RMIT University RMIT College of Design and Social Context, RMIT Architecture, RMIT Centre for Innovative Structures and Materials
Rammed Earth: Prof Jun Mu, Wei Jiang, Dr Shuang Tang, Jing Che and Dr Linxin Zhan from Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture and Onearth Studio.
Fabrication: Dr Shuang Tang, Jing Che, Dr Linxin Zhan, Dr Ding Wen ‘Nic’ Bao, Dr Xin Yan, Jinbang Liang, Ke Wang, Dingxuan Chen, Xinpei Liu, Jacob Xu and Yuzhe Zhu.
We successfully used the Bi-directional evolutionary structural optimisation (BESO) method for form-finding and robotic 3D printing techniques for the internal mold. By integrating emerging technologies with natural materials, we delivered an innovative decoration wall that showcase the collaborative research capabilities in natural materials and new technology for freeform architecture.
Supported by Ameba Institute of Engineering Structure Optimization and WONDERFORM.
